Ladies and Gentlemen, in your ranks, titles, and capacities,
Dear friends,<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would like to thank you, Minister Sheikh Nahyan Mabarak Al Nahyan, for your kind invitation to this 5th edition of the World Conference on Tolerance and Human Fraternity. The very existence of this event and the name of your Ministry testifies to the United Arab Emirates\u2019 commitment to the peaceful coexistence of cultures and civilizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For peace is not merely the absence of war, but a moral imperative that requires continuous effort and dialogue to better understand one another, overcome our prejudices, and live together in mutual respect despite our differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is heartening that the United Arab Emirates a Muslim country open to modernity and firmly rooted in its cultural and civilizational values is taking the lead in this dialogue for peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, never before has the ideal of peace and human fraternity been so challenged as it is today, in a world that daily suffers the wounds of war and struggles to overcome ignorance, fear, and all forms of extremism that build walls of division between peoples and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now more than ever, we must reject the dead-end road of a clash of civilizations. Now more than ever, we must ensure that the voice of peace continues to resonate and remind us of a timeless universal truth: peace suits the human condition better than war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why I welcome the truce in Gaza and call for the respect of the commitments made, to pave the way for a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians for the benefit of both peoples, the region, and the world, in the spirit of the Abraham Accords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, I call for an end to hostilities in Ukraine, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, to give dialogue a chance to resolve these conflicts peacefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I read through the agenda of our Conference, I noted that the themes we are discussing here particularly interreligious dialogue for mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence were addressed over a century ago in a major intellectual work by my compatriot Cheikh Moussa Kamara, a prominent Islamic scholar who lived from 1864 to 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A historian, linguist, sociologist, and anthropologist, his work is a first-rate source on the history of Islam in West Africa, especially his monumental 1700-page Arabic manuscript titled Zuh\u016br al-bas\u0101t\u012bn<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheikh Moussa was a strong advocate of interfaith dialogue. At the inauguration of Dakar Cathedral in 1935, he delivered a memorable speech on behalf of the Muslim community of then French West Africa calling for the unity of the three Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as a foundation for peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hope that the Abu Dhabi Conference on Tolerance and Human Fraternity will help bring greater awareness to his work, as part of our shared efforts to promote common values. I am ready to work with you toward that goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chers amis,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je vous remercie, Monsieur le Ministre Sheikh Nahyan Mabarak Al Nahyan<\/strong>, pour votre aimable invitation \u00e0 cette 5e<\/sup> \u00e9dition de la Conf\u00e9rence mondiale sur la tol\u00e9rance et la fraternit\u00e9 humaine, dont la tenue, tout comme l\u2019appellation de votre Minist\u00e8re, t\u00e9moigne de l\u2019engagement des Emirats Arabes Unis pour la coexistence pacifique des cultures et des civilisations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Car la paix n\u2019est pas seulement l\u2019absence de guerre, mais  un imp\u00e9ratif moral qui demande un effort permanent de dialogue pour apprendre \u00e0 mieux nous connaitre mutuellement, \u00e0 vaincre nos pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s, et vivre ensemble dans le respect de nos diff\u00e9rences.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est heureux que les Emirats Arabes Unis, pays musulman ouvert \u00e0 la modernit\u00e9 et enracin\u00e9 dans ses valeurs de culture et de civilisation, prennent le leadership dans ce dialogue pour la paix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jamais, en effet, l\u2019id\u00e9al de paix et de fraternit\u00e9 humaine n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 aussi malmen\u00e9 qu\u2019en ces temps o\u00f9 le monde souffre au quotidien des blessures de la guerre, et peine \u00e0 surmonter l\u2019ignorance, la peur et les radicalismes de tous bords qui \u00e9rigent des murs de s\u00e9paration entre les peuples et les communaut\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aujourd\u2019hui plus que jamais,<\/strong> refusons la voie sans issue du choc des civilisations. Aujourd\u2019hui plus que jamais,<\/strong> faisons en sorte que la voix de la paix continue de r\u00e9sonner pour rappeler sans cesse une v\u00e9rit\u00e9 universelle de tout temps : \u00e0 savoir que la paix convient mieux \u00e0 la condition humaine que la guerre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u2019est pourquoi je salue la tr\u00eave \u00e0 Gaza, et j\u2019invite au respect des engagements convenus pour favoriser l\u2019instauration d\u2019une paix durable entre isra\u00e9liens et palestiniens, pour le bien des deux parties, mais aussi de la sous-r\u00e9gion et du monde, dans l\u2019esprit des Accords d\u2019Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De m\u00eame, je lance un appel \u00e0 l\u2019arr\u00eat des hostilit\u00e9s en Ukraine, au Soudan et en R\u00e9publique D\u00e9mocratique du Congo pour donner une chance au dialogue pour le r\u00e8glement pacifique de ces conflits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mesdames, Messieurs,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

En lisant l\u2019ordre du jour de notre Conf\u00e9rence, j\u2019ai remarqu\u00e9 que les th\u00e8mes dont nous discutons ici, notamment le dialogue interreligieux pour la compr\u00e9hension mutuelle et la coexistence pacifique, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 abord\u00e9s il y a plus de cent ans dans une importante production intellectuelle par mon compatriote Cheikh Moussa Kamara, un \u00e9minent oul\u00e9ma qui a v\u00e9cu entre 1864 et 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historien, linguiste, sociologue et anthropologue, ses travaux constituent une source de premier choix sur l\u2019histoire de l\u2019islam en Afrique de l\u2019Ouest, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son impressionnante \u0153uvre intitul\u00e9e Zuh\u016br al-bas\u0101t\u012bn, <\/em>un manuscrit en arabe de 1700 pages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheikh Moussa \u00e9tait un ardent partisan du dialogue des religions. A l\u2019inauguration de la cath\u00e9drale de Dakar en 1935, il pronon\u00e7a, en tant que porte-parole de la communaut\u00e9 musulmane de l\u2019Afrique occidentale fran\u00e7aise d\u2019alors, un discours m\u00e9morable appelant \u00e0 l\u2019unit\u00e9 des trois religions du Livre<\/strong>, le Juda\u00efsme, le Christianisme et l\u2019Islam, comme fondement de la coexistence pacifique.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je souhaite que la Conf\u00e9rence d\u2019Abu Dhabi sur la tol\u00e9rance et la fraternit\u00e9 humaine aide \u00e0 mieux faire connaitre son \u0153uvre dans le cadre de nos efforts de promotion de nos valeurs communes. \u00a0Je suis dispos\u00e9 \u00e0 travailler avec vous dans ce sens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
